Germany's trade surplus rose sharply in June

Data published by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) showed that on a calendar and seasonally adjusted basis, German exports increased in June by 4.5% compared to May, to 134.3 billion euros, while imports increased by 0.2%, to 127.9 billion euros. In annual terms, exports increased by 18.4%, and imports rose by 27.9%. As a result, the trade surplus amounted to 6.4 billion euros compared with a deficit of 1 billion euros in May. Economists had expected a surplus of 0.2 billion euros.

Destatis reported that in June, on a calendar and seasonally adjusted basis, Germany exported goods to the value of 72.9 billion euros to the EU (+3.9% compared to May), while it imported goods to the value of 62.8 billion euros from those countries (+0.3% compared to May). The value of the goods exported to euro area countries totalled 50.7 billion euros (+3.9%) and the value of the goods imported from there was 43.1 billion euros (+0.4%). Meanwhile, the value of goods exported to EU countries outside the eurozone increased by 4% compared to May, to 22.2 billion euros, and the value of goods imported from these countries increased by 0.1%, to 19.7 billion euros.
