The employment report released by Automatic Data Processing Inc. (ADP)
and Moody's Analytics showed Wednesday that U.S. private employers added 89,000
jobs in September. That was the lowest number since a decrease in private-sector employment in
January 2021 (-69,000 jobs).
Economists had predicted an addition of 153,000 new jobs for September.
The August figure saw an upward revision to 180,000 from the initially reported 177,000.
According to the report, the September rise was driven by leisure and hospitality
(+92,000), while professional and business services (-32,000) shed the most
jobs.
The report also revealed that pay growth continued to slow in September,
with the job changers registering a gain of 9.0 per cent, down from 9.7 per
cent in August,
and the job stayers recording an advance of 5.9 per cent, marking the 12th
straight month of easing growth.
