ECB’s Governing Council member Stournaras: ECB won’t have enough information to decide on rate cuts before the end of Q2

The European Central Bank's Governing Council member Yannis Stournaras stated on Friday that the ECB's policymakers won’t have enough information to decide on rate cuts before the end of the second quarter, or June. He noted that the recent set of the euro area economic data suggests that inflation will reach 2% in the autumn of this year. “The latest deceleration in wages gives hope that we are on track," the policymaker added.

However, Stournaras suggested that a rate cut in April might be an option if the ECB receives the right kind of data, but stressed that March definitely is not.

The official also emphasized the ECB's policymakers will not take the risk of cutting rates until they can be absolutely sure that inflation is on track to meet the 2% target. He also assumed that inflation will be approaching the target much earlier than thought.
