Eurozone consumer prices growth reached a new record high in June

Preliminary data published by Eurostat showed that eurozone consumer price growth accelerated in June, exceeding forecasts and reaching a new record high. Meanwhile, core inflation growth unexpectedly slowed down. Overall, rising inflation, more than four times the ECB's 2% target, confirms the need for a rapid rate hike by the European Central Bank starting this month.

According to the report, the consumer price index rose by 8.6% per year after an increase by 8.1% in May. Economists expected an increase by 8.4%. Meanwhile, on a monthly basis, the consumer price index rose by 0.8% after a similar increase in May.

Eurostat reported that the core consumer price index - excluding energy and food prices - rose by 3.7% per year after an increase by 3.8% per year in May. Economists had expected the index to rise by 3.9%.

The data showed that the growth of the overall consumer price index was due to an increase in the cost of energy (+41.9% compared with +39.1% in May), food, alcohol & tobacco (+8.9% vs. +7.5% in May), non-energy industrial goods (+4.3% vs. +4.2% in May) and services (+3.4% vs. +3.5% in May).
