Consumer confidence in France stabilized in May

According to the report from INSEE, the consumer confidence indicator was unchanged in May, amounting to 83 points, while economists expected an increase to 84 points. Overall, the index remains well below its long-term average (100 between January 1987 and December 2022).

INSEE said that the index, which evaluates the opinion of households about their future financial situation, increased by 2 points in March. However, the index reflecting the opinion of households regarding their past financial situation decreased by 1 point. Both indices remain below their long-term averages. The balance of opinion regarding the opportunity to make major purchases has lost one point and remains well below its average.

Meanwhile, the index assessing the opinion of households regarding their current ability to save fell by 2 points, but remained slightly above the long-term average. The balance of opinion regarding their ability to save in the future fell by 2 points, but remained well above the long-term average.

The data also showed that the index assessing the opinion of households about the standard of living in France over the next twelve months increased by 3 points, but remained well below the long-term average. Households' fears about unemployment have increased slightly: the associated balance has risen by 1 point. It nevertheless remains below its long-term average.
