U.S. consumer sentiment slightly worse than initially estimated in May

The final reading for the March Reuters/Michigan index of consumer sentiment came in at 58.4 compared to the flash reading of 59.1 and the April final reading of 65.4. This was the lowest reading since August 2011 (55.8).

Economists had foreseen the index to stay unrevised at 59.1.

The details of the latest Surveys of Consumers of the University of Michigan also showed that the index of consumer expectations plunged 11.7 percent m-o-m to 55.2 this month, while the index of the current economic conditions declined 8.8 percent m-o-m to 63.3.

Commenting on the final results, Richard Curtin, Surveys of Consumers chief economist, noted that May deterioration in consumer confidence largely reflected continued negative views on current buying conditions for houses and durables, as well as consumers’ future outlook for the economy, primarily due to worries about inflation.
