Spain's retail sales rose sharply in January

Data from the National Statistics Institute (INE) showed on Friday that retail sales jumped by 5.5% per annum in January, accelerating compared to December (+4.8% per annum, revised from +4%), and recording the sharpest increase since May 2021. 

Meanwhile, excluding service stations, retail sales increased by 6.3% per annum. If these sales are broken down by type of product, Food decreased by 1.7%, and Non-food products increased by 15.0%.

INE also said that retail sales increased by 0.4% on a monthly basis after an increase of 0.5% in December (revised from -1.7%). Excluding service stations, retail sales increased by 3.3%. By products, Food increased by 0.5% and Non-food products by 5.4%. If the latter is broken down by type of product, Personal equipment increased the most (4.9%).
