Statistics Canada reported on Friday that the number of employed people declined
by 30,600 m-o-m in July (or -0.2 percent m-o-m) after an unrevised decrease of 43,200 m-o-m in the previous month.
Economists had predicted a rise of 20,000 m-o-m.
Meanwhile, Canada's unemployment rate remained unchanged m-o-m at a record low of 4.9 percent in July, being below economists’ forecast of 5.0
percent.
According to the report, full-time employment dropped by 13,100 (or -0.1
percent m-o-m) in July, while part-time jobs decreased by 17,500 (or -0.5 percent
m-o-m).
Over the month, the number of public sector employees declined by 51,000
(or -1.2 percent m-o-m), while the number of private sector employees slipped by
13,800 (or -0.1 percent m-o-m). Meanwhile, the number of self-employed jumped
by 34,200 (or +1.3 percent m-o-m).
Sector-wise, employment fell in the services-producing business (-0.3
percent m-o-m) but increase in the goods-producing industry (+0.6 percent
m-o-m).
