China hopes to expand trade cooperation with the United States - representative of the Ministry of Commerce

A representative of the Chinese Ministry of Commerce said he hopes the United States will create conditions for expanding trade cooperation after China failed to meet the targets approved in the Trump-era trade deal.

According to the Peterson Institute for International Economics, the deal involved an increase in purchases of US goods by $200 billion, but China fulfilled the deal by only 60% of the target by November 2021.

"Since the Phase 1 agreement entered into force, China has been trying to overcome many adverse factors, including the pandemic, the global recession and supply chain disruptions," said Shu Jueting, a spokesman for the Ministry of Commerce, and added that he hopes the United States will create favorable conditions for both sides to expand trade cooperation.

Meanwhile, the US Secretary of Agriculture said that the US will continue to pressure China to fully comply with the terms of the trade deal before discussing its extension.
