French consumer confidence unexpectedly rose in December

According to the report from INSEE, in December the consumer confidence index rose to 100 points compared to 98 points in November. As a result, the index has reached its long-term average. Economists had expected the index to decline to 97 points.

The data showed that the index of household opinion about their past financial condition increased by 2 points, while the index of opinions about their future personal financial condition did not change. Meanwhile, the index, reflecting the share of households that consider the current situation as good for large purchases, increased by 3 points. The index of household opinions regarding their future savings capacity fell by 3 points, while the index of current savings capacity did not change relative to November.

INSEE reported that the index, which estimates the share of households that have seen an improvement in the standard of living in the country, increased by 3 points in December. Meanwhile, the index reflecting the share of households that expect an improvement in living standards increased by 2 points.

The data also showed that the index of the share of households that expect further growth in consumer prices increased by 3 points, and reached the highest level since 2012.
