The results of a survey conducted by the Nikkei newspaper from Friday to Sunday showed that Japanese voters' support for the government of Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, who took office in October, increased by 4% to 65%, helped by new measures to combat coronavirus.
The survey revealed that 61% of respondents positively assessed the steps to combat coronavirus, which is the maximum since the beginning of these surveys in February 2020.
Against the background of the emergence and spread of a new strain of the Omicron coronavirus, the Japanese government announced last month a ban on foreigners entering Japan for about a month, and last week the validity of this ban was extended for the New Year holidays.
Over the past month, the number of new cases of coronavirus in Japan has increased moderately - from 115 cases on December 1 to 225 cases on December 26 - but remained significantly lower than more than 20,000 cases per day during the last peak in August.
