China will revise restrictions on energy consumption to reduce pressure on the economy

The document, published after the annual Central Economic Working Conference, showed that the Chinese government will ease restrictions on energy consumption to reduce pressure on the national economy.

The document also reported that China's economic tasks next year will "prioritize stability," while "all regions and departments should take responsibility for stabilizing the macroeconomics."

In order to guarantee energy supplies, the newly added renewable capacities and "raw energy" will now be exempt from any restrictions on energy consumption, the report says.

Experts note that the latest steps of the government may signal the easing of restrictions for heavy industry, such as coal chemicals and petrochemicals.

In addition, the document notes that China is striving to move as soon as possible from energy consumption targets to "double control" of both total carbon emissions and carbon intensity, which increases the likelihood that the government will set a goal for a total carbon limit.
