New strain of coronavirus may cause revision of growth forecasts - IMF chief

The head of the IMF Kristalina Georgieva said that against the background of the rapid spread of a new strain of coronavirus, the IMF may revise its forecasts of economic growth downward.

"The omicron strain can undermine confidence, and against this background, the IMF is likely to worsen the October forecasts for global economic growth, which assume growth of 5.9% in 2021 and 4.9% in 2022," Georgieva said.

The head of the IMF said that the problem of high inflation in the US needs to be solved, adding that the strength of the US economy has a positive secondary effect around the world. As for the prospects of the Fed's monetary policy, Georgieva said that an increase in interest rates may occur earlier than expected.

Georgieva said that one of the ways to control inflation is to reduce tariffs. In addition, she spoke in favor of more aggressive debt restructuring so that the current debt burden in developing countries does not turn into a long-term obstacle.
