AUD and other riskier currencies demonstrated declines in the European session on Friday, as investors’ sentiment was shaken by fears of a new, heavily-mutated variant of coronavirus, which was first identified in South Africa.

The news on the coronavirus variant, which is feared to prove highly infectious and vaccine-resistant, added to investors’ worries about the pandemic and its impacts on the global economy.

The World Health Organization (WHO) is to meet later today to assess the danger of the new variant. Meanwhile, some countries in Europe and Asia have already begun to impose travel restrictions.
