White House releases readout of yesterday's summit between Biden and Xi

White House released a readout of yesterday's virtual meeting between U.S. President Joe Biden and China's President Xi Jinping. During the event the two leaders discussed the complex nature of relations between their countries, the publication said.

In particular, Biden was clear that the United States needs to protect its workers and industries from China's "unfair trade and economic practices". Also, he expressed concerns about the Chinese practices in Xinjiang, Tibet, and Hong Kong, as well as human rights more broadly. Regarding the situation with Taiwan, Biden stated that the U.S. remains committed to the "one China" policy, guided by the Taiwan Relations Act, the three Joint Communiques, and the Six Assurances, and "strongly opposes unilateral efforts to change the status quo or undermine peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait."

Meanwhile, China's state-run media Global Times reported that after the virtual meeting Xi said Biden is "playing with fire" regarding U.S. support for Taiwan.
