U.S. job openings drop 1.8 percent in September; hires decrease 0.6 percent

The Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS) published by the Labor Department on Friday revealed a 1.8 percent m-o-m drop in the U.S. job openings in September after a revised 4.2 percent m-o-m decrease in August (originally a 5.9 percent m-o-m plunge).

According to the report, employers posted 10.438 million job openings in September compared to the August reading of 10.629 million (revised from 10.439 million in the original estimate) and economists’ expectations of 10.300 million. The job openings rate was 6.6 percent in September, down from a revised 6.7 percent in the previous month (originally 6.6 percent). The report showed that the job openings rose in health care and social assistance (+141,000), state and local government, excluding education (+114,000), wholesale trade (+51,000), and information (+51,000). However, these gains were more than offset by declines in state and local government education (-114,000), other services (-104,000), real estate and rental and leasing (-65,000), and educational services (-45,000).

Meanwhile, the number of hires went down 0.6 percent m-o-m to 6.459 million in September from a revised 6.497 million in August (originally 6.322 million). The hiring rate remained unchanged at 4.4 percent in September. Hires declined in state and local government education (-92,000) and educational services (-89,000). These decreases were partially offset by increases in health care and social assistance (+109,000) and finance and insurance (+60,000).

The separation rate in September was 6.218 million or 4.2 percent, compared to 6.032 million or 4.1 percent in August. Within separations, the quits rate was 3.0 percent (+0.1 p.p. m-o-m), and the layoffs rate was 0.9 percent (flat m-o-m).
