Eurozone's trade surplus shrank sharply in August.

According to the report from Eurostat, the first estimate for euro area exports of goods to the rest of the world in August 2021 was €184.3 billion, an increase of 18.2% compared with August 2020 (€155.9 bn). Imports from the rest of the world stood at €179.5 bn, a rise of 26.6% compared with August 2020 (€141.8 bn). As a result, the euro area recorded a €4.8 bn surplus in trade in goods with the rest of the world in August 2021, compared with +€14.0 bn in August 2020. Intra-euro area trade rose to €155.5 bn in August 2021, up by 21.2% compared with August 2020.

In January to August 2021, euro area exports of goods to the rest of the world rose to €1 563.0 bn (an increase of 15.2% compared with January-August 2020), and imports rose to €1 436.2 bn (an increase of 16.8% compared with January-August 2020). As a result the euro area recorded a surplus of €126.9 bn, compared with +€126.8 bn in January-August 2020. Intra-euro area trade rose to €1 388.4 bn in January-August 2021, up by 20.3% compared with January-August 2020.
